"Jesus said to them, 'I am the bread of life; whoever comes to me shall not hunger, and whoever believes in me shall never thirst'"
This statement of Jesus follows the famous story of feeding the 5,000
From two fish and 5 loaves of bread Jesus provides enough food for over 5,000 people to have there fill
Now there must have been a significant number of people who didn't get to see the miracle up close, all they knew was that they were hungry and this guy Jesus was responsible for giving them food.
Even if they were told by others how the food was miraculously provided or if they had truly seen it up close, food is a very powerful motivator and if some is a source of free food when your hungry you're going to follow Him.
The people didn't get the purpose of the miracle, they didn't even place a huge value on Jesus... they just wanted food
I do this so often... I place such a high emphasis and desire on what Jesus can do for me instead of recognizing Jesus for who He is and what His purpose is.
Jesus is the bread of life... Jesus does not just provide us with our physical needs (which are so temporary) He is the only provision for eternal life. So instead of following around Jesus because it has given some temporary payoff, follow Jesus because He has given you eternal life and nothing can take that from you
